Pedal Powered Bikes

To engage students in utilising a more sustainable approach to energy use and provide a better appreciation for the amount of energy required to generate electricity, St Joseph’s College purchased four “Future Spark” generating bikes in 2014.  The bikes are designed to convert mechanical energy generated whilst pedalling, into electrical energy via an electromagnet attached to the back wheel, an inverter and battery.  The bikes have been utilised by  Yr9 students to power a combined Clonard and SJC short film festival last year and it is anticipated that they will be utilised to power the projector for assemblies at Westcourt from term 3 this year.
